Johor Darul Takzim will most likely advance as group winners after Selangor suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat to Sarawak at home.
The Red Giants now trail to JDT on goal difference as all eyes are now on the final matchday on 9 September to see who will win Group D.
Selangor and Sarawak were playing weakened sides due to other priorities as they struggle to penetrate each other’s box.
It took until 14 minutes to see the first shot on-target as Shahril Saa’ri pulled off a great save to deny Syahmi Safari’s free-kick.
Sarawak themselves could’ve been in the lead after 30 minutes had last-ditch defending not thwarted Mateo Roskam and Milos Raickovic who had chances to shoot right in front of goal.
Seven minutes later, Selangor took the lead when Syahmi’s free-kick from the right found Ugo Ukah who rose highest to head the ball downwards and into the net.
After the restart, Sarawak played with more vigor as they tried to unsettle the Selangor defense.
Seven minutes after the restart, their hard work paid off following a counter-attack that stretched the Selangor defense.
It resulted in Nur Shamie Iszuan’s cross to go through two defenders and found Roskam, who tricked Fairuz Abdul Aziz, when the defender slid in, to score past stand-in keeper, Zarif Irfan.
On the 66th minute, Sarawak took the lead as after Alif Hassan’s free-kick hit the post, a horrible clearance by Amri Yahyah across the box went straight to Raickovic who surely wouldn’t made a mistake as he bury his shot into the net.
Just barely a minute later, Amri should’ve made amends to his mistake, but Shahril denied him from point-blank after a sublime cross from Syahmi.
Selangor tried to find the equalizer as chances by Ukah, Amri and Saiful Ridzuwan were spurned. They could not do so following Sarawak’s smart possession and defending as the match ended a win for the visiting Crocs.
