BREAKING: Ashley Westwood has resigned from Penang FA

Football Association of Penang (FAP)’s president Zairil Khir Johari has confirmed that Penang FA has terminated their contract with head coach, Ashley Westwood.

The news was announced on Penang FA’s official Facebook page just about one hour ago.

The former Manchester United trainee signed a contract with Penang FA as head coach back in November 2016 — prior to the start of the 2017 Malaysia Super League season.

However, the northern club suffered 6 losses and managed only 2 draws since the league kicked off in January. They are perched at the bottom of the MSL table with only 2 points.

The embarrassing defeats, paired with protests from the Penang fans left FAP with no choice but to end things with the 40-year-old Englishman.

“The Football Association of Penang (FAP) has reached a consensus about the termination of Ashley Westwood’s contract as Penang FA’s head coach.” the official press statement read.

“Following discussions with Ashley Westwood, Westwood has agreed to end his services and has resigned as head coach with immediate effect.”

“On behalf of FAP, I (Zairil) would like to convey our appreciation for his services and efforts for the Penang team thus far.”

To temporarily fill his position, FAP has agreed to appoint Darren Read, Penang’s Assistant General Manager, as acting head coach for now. Zairil Khir Johari also added that FAP will be announcing a new name for head coach in the near future.

Penang fans, are you happy about this? Let us know!
